Setting goals for 2021?

Make your annual review go smoother with these tips for the year.

If you are just like me, you just finished your end of year review. Maybe you’ve met with your boss and you don’t even want to think about it anymore.

But right now, is the time to really think about next year and what it is going to look like.  I know… I know… you are thinking how could I even imagine next year, right?

Think about the incredible amount of work you got done last year under a tremendous amount of stress. Not even realizing how much you accomplished. For a minute think about projects that you're working on this year. Now as you start to work on those projects, start to capture highlights, start to capture the “to-dos” once a week. Sit down and really go over the past week and think about what you've done and what you've accomplished in that week.

That simple act will do at least two things:

  1. It gives you an awesome list to work from next year when you are pulling your review together.

  2. It helps you to feel productive. And personally, I find that when there are weeks that there's not enough on that list, it drives me the next week to put more in.

  3. Helps you align what this year looks like and gets you started thinking about your goals for 2021.

It is a great practice to start. It's easy to do. It just takes a piece of paper, a notebook, or your computer. So, start to work on capturing what you've accomplished this week so that you can more easily put together that performance review next year.  One last secret – consistency. Every week make a date with yourself to take 20 minutes to do it.

Trust me you’ll be incredibly happy you did next year when you already have the hard part complete!
